Tawaf, circling the Kaaba seven times, is the emotional heart of Umrah. For many pilgrims it is the moment they have imagined for years. Doing it correctly is not complicated, but a few details matter: where you start, how you count, what men do differently in the first circuits, and what to do when the Mataf is crowded. This guide explains how to perform Tawaf step by step so you can focus on your worship, not your logistics.

What is Tawaf?

Tawaf is the act of circling the Kaaba seven times in an anti-clockwise direction, keeping the Kaaba on your left. It is one of the four core steps of Umrah, coming after you enter Ihram and reach Masjid al-Haram. Before you begin Tawaf

• Be in a state of wudu (ritual purity); Tawaf requires it.
• Ensure your awrah is properly covered.
• Men keep the right shoulder uncovered for this Tawaf (Idtiba), passing the rida under the right arm.
• Enter Masjid al-Haram with the right foot and make dua on first seeing the Kaaba.

Step 1: Start at the Black Stone

Each circuit begins and ends at the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad), set in the corner of the Kaaba. Face it, and if you can reach it, kiss or touch it (istilam). When it is crowded, do not push or harm others, simply point toward it with your right hand and say “Bismillah, Allahu Akbar.” This gesture counts.

Step 2: Complete seven circuits

Walk anti-clockwise with the Kaaba on your left, completing seven full circuits. Count carefully, losing count is the most common Tawaf mistake. Many pilgrims use a finger count or a small counter.

Ramal in the first three circuits (men)

For the first three of the seven circuits, men perform Ramal: a brisk, energetic walk with short quick steps, chest out. The remaining four circuits are walked normally. Women do not perform Ramal.

The Yemeni Corner

When you reach the Yemeni Corner (Rukn Yamani), the corner just before the Black Stone, touch it with your right hand if you can, without kissing it and without saying takbir. If it is crowded, simply continue. Between the Yemeni Corner and the Black Stone, recite: “Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanah, wa fil-akhirati hasanah, wa qina adhaban-nar” (“Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire”).

Step 3: Pray two rak’ah at Maqam Ibrahim

After the seventh circuit, pray two short rak’ah, ideally behind Maqam Ibrahim, or anywhere in the mosque if it is crowded. It is Sunnah to recite Surah al-Kafirun in the first rak’ah and Surah al-Ikhlas in the second.

Step 4: Drink Zamzam and make dua

Afterwards, drink Zamzam water freely and make dua, it is a blessed time and place for supplication. Some pilgrims also make dua at the Multazam, the area between the Black Stone and the door of the Kaaba, when access allows. With Tawaf complete, you move on to Sa’i between Safa and Marwah.

Common Tawaf mistakes

• Pushing or fighting through crowds to kiss the Black Stone; pointing is enough and harming others is forbidden.
• Losing count of the circuits; use a reliable counting method.
• Starting a circuit before the Black Stone line, which makes the count inaccurate.
• Performing Ramal in all seven circuits instead of only the first three (men).
• Praying the two rak’ah directly in the walking path and blocking others.
