Ihram Rules for Men & Women: Everything You Need to Know

For every Muslim preparing to perform Umrah or Hajj, entering the state of Ihram is one of the most important steps of the journey. Understanding the rules of Ihram helps pilgrims perform their worship correctly and avoid mistakes that may affect their Umrah.

What Is Ihram?

Ihram is a sacred state that a Muslim enters before performing Umrah or Hajj. It begins with making the intention (Niyyah) and reciting the Talbiyah before crossing the Miqat.

Once a person enters Ihram, certain actions become prohibited until the Umrah or Hajj rituals are completed.

Miqat – Where Should You Wear Ihram?

Pilgrims must enter Ihram before crossing the designated Miqat boundary.

For most travelers coming from the USA, the intention for Umrah is usually made on the airplane before reaching the Miqat. Airlines often announce when the Miqat is approaching, allowing passengers to prepare.

Ihram Rules for Men

Clothing for Men

Men must wear:

  • Two plain white, unstitched pieces of cloth
  • One cloth covering the lower body (Izar)
  • One cloth covering the upper body (Rida) Men should not wear:
  • Stitched clothing such as shirts, trousers, jackets, or underwear
  • Socks covering the ankles
  • Shoes that cover the top of the feet Simple sandals are generally recommended. Head Covering

Men must not cover their heads while in Ihram.

Items such as:

  • Caps
  • Hats
  • Turbans are not permitted. Talbiyah

After making the intention, men should recite:

“Labbayk Allahumma Labbayk, Labbayka La Sharika Laka Labbayk. Innal Hamda Wan-Ni’mata Laka Wal-Mulk. La Sharika Lak.”

Men may recite the Talbiyah aloud.

Ihram Rules for Women

Clothing for Women

Women do not have a specific Ihram dress. Women may wear:

  • Loose and modest Islamic clothing
  • Abaya
  • Long dresses
  • Hijab

The clothing should:

  • Cover the entire body
  • Not be transparent
  • Not be excessively decorative

Face Covering

Women should not wear:

  • Niqab
  • Face veil specifically tied to the face while in Ihram

However, if non-Mahram men are present, a woman may lower a loose cloth from her head covering over her face without attaching it directly to the face.

Hands

Women may wear normal clothing but should avoid gloves while in Ihram.

Talbiyah

Women should also recite the Talbiyah, but in a moderate voice.

Things Forbidden During Ihram

The following actions are prohibited for both men and women while in Ihram:

1.  Cutting Hair

Do not:

  • Cut hair
    • Trim hair
    • Remove hair intentionally

2.  Cutting Nails

Avoid trimming fingernails or toenails.

3.  Using Perfume

Do not apply:

  • Perfume
    • Scented oils
    • Fragrances after entering Ihram.

4.  Hunting Animals

Hunting or assisting in hunting animals is not permitted.

5.  Marriage Contracts

Nikah ceremonies should not be conducted while in the state of Ihram.

6.  Marital Relations


Intimate relations between husband and wife are prohibited until Umrah or Hajj rituals are completed.

7.  Arguments and Bad Behavior

Pilgrims should avoid:

  • Fighting
    • Arguments
    • Offensive language
    • Harmful behavior

Ihram is a time of patience, humility, and remembrance of Allah.

What Should You Do While in Ihram?

While in Ihram, try to:

  • Recite Talbiyah frequently
    • Make Dua
    • Read the Quran
    • Perform Dhikr
    • Seek forgiveness
    • Remain patient and humble

How Is Ihram Completed During Umrah?

After completing:

  1. Tawaf around the Kaaba
  2. Sa’i between Safa and Marwah The final step is:

For Men

  • Shaving the head completely (preferred)
    • Or shortening the hair from all sides

For Women

  • Cutting a small portion of hair (approximately fingertip length)

After this, the state of Ihram ends and all normal activities become permissible again.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Crossing Miqat without Ihram
    • Wearing perfume after entering Ihram
    • Forgetting the intention (Niyyah)
    • Wearing stitched clothes for men
    • Covering the face with a Niqab during Ihram
    • Cutting nails or hair before completing Umrah
    • Engaging in arguments or inappropriate behavior
